This application was for a single house and associated works on a site at Farranmacfarrell, southwest of the village of Dromore West. Trench 1 was 39m long and 4m wide, Trench 2 was 16m long and Trench 3 was 19m long, and each was 1m wide. A JCB with a toothless bucket was used to remove the topsoil, which was no more than 0.15m thick, and below it were the glacially deposited materials derived from the acidic metamorphic rocks of the Ox Mountains. In light of the distance to the ringfort, SMR 18:6, 55m beyond the site boundary, the totally non-archaeological state of the ground and the lack of any hint of adjacent archaeology in the area, it was considered that there was no need for any further testing.
