Pre-development testing was carried out on 19 May 2004 at the site of a proposed dwelling at Carrigans Upper, Ballymote, Co. Sligo. The proposed development was located within the archaeological constraint for a field system (SMR 33:70). An early 20th-century cottage was located in the north-west corner of the development site.

The testing comprised the excavation (by machine) of four trenches, which measured 49.6m, 8m, 19.4m and 29.7m long respectively, 1-1.25m wide and 0.1-1.15m deep. Below the topsoil was mid-brown firm clay loam with frequent rocks, grey/orange/brown friable silt loam with a moderate amount of rocks, mottled brown firm clay loam with occasional rocks and mottled brown plastic clay with occasional decayed rocks, all sterile natural subsoils.

Modern artefacts, the majority of 20th-century date, were recovered from the topsoil. Nothing of archaeological significance was revealed.
