The site of the proposed development, the construction of a house, garage and septic tank/percolation area, is near a substantial earthworks complex of indeterminate date. A 20m buffer zone will be maintained between the edge of the monument and the proposed development. Five test-trenches were excavated by machine in September 2004. Two were located across the proposed foundation of the house, one across the proposed garage and one each for the access and septic tank/percolation area. In Trenches 1 and 5, furrows were revealed in the subsoil. These are clearly of late origin, as investigation revealed white-glazed pottery and bottle glass in addition to charcoal. They measured roughly 0.2–0.25m wide and were easily defined by the lighter grey clay they contain. There was no evidence of pre-19th-century activity on the site.
