Planning permission was granted for the construction of 76 dwelling houses beside the site of Kilcolman Castle, 1km north of Ballaghaderreen, subject to an assessment of the site. The castle was demolished in 1950 during agricultural land improvement, prior to which test-trenching had been carried out by the National Museum of Ireland.

As part of the assessment of the site, testing was undertaken in January 2004. A total of 24 trenches were dug in the proposed location of the front and rear walls of each block of houses and along the service routes. All trenches were dug to the surface of the undisturbed subsoil. No evidence of the castle remains, or any archaeological remains, were found in any of the trenches.
