Testing was undertaken prior to the development of a dwelling house at Gortnasythe, Co. Roscommon, which is near a barrow. Four trenches were mechanically excavated. In Trench A, sod and topsoil overlay an orange-coloured sandy subsoil, which was 1m in depth. This in turn overlay a natural grey sandy gravel layer, which was excavated to a depth of 0.4m. In Trench B, the sod overlay a blackish stony gravel layer in the western end of the trench. This measured 0.3m in depth and overlay the grey sandy layer. In the remainder of the trench the sod overlay the natural grey sandy gravel layer. In Trenches C and D, sod and topsoil overlay an orange sandy subsoil, which was excavated to a depth of 0.65m and 0.5m respectively. The testing did not reveal any features of archaeological significance.
