Pre-development monitoring of topsoil-stripping took place at a proposed development site at 14 O'Connell Street, Athlone, Co. Roscommon.
The development site is located to the rear of a residential property on the western bank of the River Shannon within the zone of archaeological potential for Athlone town (SMR 29:42). The development proposal involves converting the house to office space. This requires the erection of an extension to the rear of the house to facilitate a stairwell. Work was carried out by hand, as the small area was unsuitable for machinery.
A midden and associated row of stones were identified dated to the 19th century. No further archaeological work was required on site.
