The proposed development site is located outside Jamestown, Co. Leitrim, on the Roscommon side of the River Shannon. It will include the insertion of a new domestic waste treatment system to the rear of a 20-year-old house. The site is located on the edge of the Doon of Drumsna, a massive Iron Age defensive earthwork. The house was built on the very edge of the terminal end of one of the earthen banks. The western property boundary is defined by a sharp cut, with the level ground to the rear of the house being 0.6m below the level of the ground immediately west of the site boundary. As the ground rises steeply to the west of the site, being part of the earthworks, it appears as if a portion of the earthwork may have been removed during house construction. The proposed waste treatment system, piping and percolation area are to be situated immediately east of the western site boundary. Due to the potential of subsurface archaeology, the excavation for the tank and pipe were carried out manually to the level of undisturbed natural. The excavation revealed compact natural clay beneath a thin layer of topsoil, confirming that the site had been extensively scarped during the construction of the house. There was no evidence of archaeological activity.
