A 480m2 excavation was undertaken in the townland of Tullyhirm, c. 1km to the east of Monaghan town, in advance of the construction of the 2.65km N2 Monaghan bypass. The previously unknown site had been discovered by Shane Delaney at route Chainage 0675 during a testing programme (No. 1369, Excavations 2004, 04E0106).
The site comprised a spread of charcoal-rich silt and heat-shattered stone sealing a pit, and two large field-clearance pits filled with charcoal-flecked silty peat. The spread measured 5m by 2m by 0.25m deep.
