Test-trenching began on site on 21 October 2004 and lasted for two days. It was carried out using a five-tonne mini-excavator equipped with a flat, toothless bucket. In total, 41m of trenches were mechanically investigated across the test area.
In three of the four trenches excavated, natural subsoil was sealed by a layer of 804 grade hardcore, which varied in depth between 0.4m and 0.6m. In the fourth trench, at the eastern side of the test area, a stone-built drainage culvert was recorded. It was oriented east-west and measured 0.6m wide by 0.5m deep.
