Test-trenching was undertaken at the site on 20 and 21 October. This was carried out using a five-tonne mini-excavator equipped with a flat, toothless bucket. Four trenches were mechanically excavated across the test area. They varied in length from 5m to 18m, were 1.5m in width and were 0.7-1.15m deep.
In all four trenches, building debris overlay natural subsoil, but a thin layer (0.05m) of possible garden soils was recorded in the western section face of the trench at the western extremity of the proposed development area.
