Test-trenching was undertaken at the site on 20 and 21 October. This was carried out using a five-tonne mini-excavator equipped with a flat, toothless bucket. Four trenches were mechanically excavated across the test area. They varied in length from 5m to 18m, were 1.5m in width and were 0.7–1.15m deep.

In all four trenches, building debris overlay natural subsoil, but a thin layer (0.05m) of possible garden soils was recorded in the western section face of the trench at the western extremity of the proposed development area.
