This site was identified as the result of a programme of topsoil-stripping undertaken in December 2003 to June 2004 (No. 1363, Excavations 2004, 04E0089). This monitoring area was between Chainage 16.880 and 17.680 of the proposed N2 CarrickmacrossâAclint road realignment.
The site consisted of a badly disturbed deposit of burnt-mound material measuring c. 5m by 5m. This site was located at the edge of a small river/stream halfway between two previously excavated burnt mounds in sites Monanny 1 and Monanny 2 (Excavations 2003, Nos 1503 and 1504, 03E0888 and 03E1254). The Monanny burnt mounds were well defined; they contained troughs with elements of timber lining and additional features such as hearths and pits/post-holes. The site at Cloghvally Upper 2 may have been associated with these sites.
