A 900m2 excavation was undertaken in the townland of Annahagh, c. 1.25km to the east of Monaghan town in advance of the construction of the 2.65km N2 Monaghan bypass. The previously unknown site had been discovered by Shane Delaney at route Chainage 1210 during a testing programme (No. 1369, Excavations 2004, 04E0106).
The site comprised a 'burnt mound', defined by a large spread of charcoal-rich silt and heat-shattered stone sealing two pits (troughs), all of which were truncated by recent agricultural activity. The mound measured 17.5m by 10m by 0.4m deep. One piece of flint debitage was recovered from one of the troughs.
