Excavations for a proposed residential/commercial development at Haggard Street, Trim, were monitored on 1 March 2004. The development site is located in the northern part of the medieval town and lies immediately south-east of St Patrick's Church of Ireland Cathedral, the grounds of which contain the remains of a medieval church. Prior to development, the site contained a small single-storey building on Haggard Street, with a long garden plot located to the rear of this building. Following demolition of the existing building, a tracked excavator fitted with a wide toothless bucket was retained to reduce the site area to the level required for the proposed raft foundation. The east end of the site was excavated to a depth of 0.45m below the level of the footpath on Haggard Street, while the west end was excavated to a depth of 1m below the old garden surface. Excavations in the east part of the site exposed the foundations of the demolished building and associated rubble deposits. The garden soil comprised dark-brown silt with frequent inclusions of modern materials. The underlying yellow/brown sandy clay subsoil was occasionally exposed in the west part of the site. No archaeological material was discovered during monitoring of excavations.
