Test-trenching of this proposed development was undertaken and nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered. In medieval times the site consisted of a marshy area, through which a river flowed, outside the town wall. The location of the basement of the proposed hotel was cleared to subsoil under archaeological supervision in March and September 2004 and nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered.
