An assessment of Testing Area 10 in Contract 1 of the Clonee–North of Kells PPP scheme was undertaken on behalf of Meath County Council. Testing Area 10 is located in Rathbeggan townland, west of the existing N3 Dublin–Navan road and north of the River Tolka, c. 4.5–6.3km south-west of Dunshaughlin. The proposed development at this site is a 2km-long stretch of mainline dual carriageway. The testing methodology generally consisted of mechanically excavating 2m-wide test-trenches along the centre-line and perpendicular to the centre-line to the edge of the land-take every 20m. A total of 127 test-trenches, representing 7556.9 linear metres, were excavated for Testing Area 10. This figure represents 10.77% of the total area made available for testing.
No sites, features or objects of archaeological potential were recorded in the assessment. Three geophysical anomalies were tested, but no archaeological features and no changes in underlying geology were recorded.
