An assessment of Testing Area 4 in Contract 3 of the Clonee–North of Kells PPP scheme was undertaken on behalf of Meath County Council. Testing Area 4 is located in Macetown townland, south-west of Navan town. The proposed development in this area is a 1km-long stretch of the Navan bypass and a 230m-long re-alignment of the Robinstown road. The testing methodology generally consisted of mechanically excavating 2m-wide test-trenches along the centre-line and perpendicular to the centre-line to the edge of the land-take every 20m.
A total of 58 test-trenches, representing 7528.1 linear metres, were excavated in Testing Area 4. The only features of archaeological potential were a single pit and a curvilinear slot-trench. This area has been designated Macetown 1.
