An assessment of Testing Area 1 in Contract 3 of the Clonee to North of Kells PPP scheme was undertaken on behalf of Meath County Council. Testing Area 1 is located in Kennastown townland, to the south of Navan town. The proposed development in this area consists of an interchange linking the motorway and the Navan bypass. The testing methodology generally consisted of mechanically excavating 2m-wide test-trenches along the centre-line and perpendicular to the centre-line to the edge of the land-take every 20m.

A total of 95 test-trenches, representing 8286.8 linear metres, were excavated for Testing Area 1. Two archaeological sites were revealed in the testing.

Kennastown 1 consisted of seven separate concentrations of possible prehistoric activity revealed in Plots 1133.4–1133.6. These were indicated by the presence of burnt mounds and burnt spreads.

Kennastown 2 consisted of a possible rectangular enclosure located in Plot 1133.8. This is indicated by the presence of linear ditches and associated features.
