Meath County Council carried out a programme of upgrading of water supply along Suffolk Street between August and October 2004. This comprised laying a new 150mm-diameter water main and a new surface water pipe over a length of 140m to a depth of c. 1.5m. The street surface was also replaced. The writer was requested to carry out monitoring during pipelaying and street resurfacing. However, it was considered desirable to carry out testing in advance of pipelaying so that possible archaeological strata could be identified before full construction commenced. The testing was followed by monitoring during construction. Eight trenches tested the proposed line of the pipes. None of the trenches produced archaeological features. Cut features were observed in Trenches 2 and 3. These could not be interpreted as archaeological features and it is more likely that they were associated with previous excavations for sewerage and water mains along the street.
