An impact assessment took place for a proposed housing development site located outside Trim town. Planning permission is being sought to erect 564 dwellings with associated services and access routes in Iffernock, Friarspark 2nd Division and Maudlin townlands, Trim, Co. Meath. The site is close to the statutory protected town of Trim (SMR 36:48), which is located c. 1.2km east of the site.
Forty-two trenches were excavated within the three fields of the development. Thirty-nine trenches were either east-west or north-east/south-west orientated and were excavated 25m apart, while three were north-south orientated. One was located in the northern corner of Field 3 and a further two trenches were excavated in the south-eastern corner of Field 1 and south-western corner of Field 3, respectively, in order to locate the possible remains of a cropmark feature noted in an aerial photograph.
Ten features were discovered and partially recorded on site. They appear to represent post-medieval agricultural features, boundary features and garden or allotment plots. They are of no archaeological significance.
The two trenches that were excavated to locate any remains of the cropmark, which was visible in an aerial photograph of the site, yielded no information. There was no evidence that the curving tree line, which formed the southern boundary of Field 2, represented the northern edge of a cropmark.
