Testing was carried out at Glebewood, Rathoath, Co. Meath, on a 0.5ha site of a proposed development in an area of archaeological potential adjacent to a graveyard. A house had previously been built on the east of the site in 1998 without any archaeological input. The remaining land had been extensively landscaped, including the building of raised walkways and the importation of many tonnes of topsoil. The gardens were opened to the public in 1999.
Testing was carried out at the location of House A. Four trenches were dug and the soil spread. No sites or artefacts of archaeological significance were present.
The soil mounds to the north and west of the site are to be distributed evenly over the area of the site for House B. This would raise the ground level c. 0.5m, so that the construction of House B would not impact on the original ground surface. No testing was carried out in this area.
