An assessment of Testing Area 12 in Contract 1 of the Clonee–North of Kells PPP scheme was undertaken on behalf of Meath County Council. Testing Area 12 is located in Derrockstown townland, west of the existing N3 Dublin–Navan road, south of Dunshaughlin. The proposed development at this site is a 500m-long stretch of dual carriageway leading to an interchange with the N3 Navan–Dunshaughlin road. The testing methodology generally consisted of mechanically excavating 2mwide test-trenches along the centre-line and perpendicular to the centre-line to the edge of the land-take every 20m. A total of 33 test-trenches representing 1665 linear metres were excavated for Testing Area 12. This figure represents 10.8% of the total area available for testing.

No sites, features or objects of archaeological potential were recorded in the assessment. A low circular mound was recorded during the EIS. A topographical survey undertaken in advance of the centre-line testing revealed that it had dimensions of 14m north-east/south-west by 11.5m and was 0.4m high. The crest of the mound was recorded at a height of 90.4m OD. There was 0.4m (average) of topsoil recorded covering the mound. Centre-line testing proved this feature to be natural in origin.
