An assessment of M3 Contract 1 (Clonee–Dunshaughlin), Testing Area 2, along the proposed route of the Dunboyne link road south (Chainage 350–1250) was requested by Meath County Council. Located in the townlands of Castlefarm and Dunboyne, the area comprised four large fields separated by drainage ditches and mature hedgerow. Geophysical survey identified a number of tentative archaeological anomalies.
Forty-eight test-trenches were excavated through the area, with a combined length of 2864m (resulting in a total excavated area of 6158m2). The assessment determined that the anomalies recorded in the geophysical survey were natural occurrences or residual traces of metallic objects in the ploughsoil. The assessment concluded that the area was void of archaeological remains.
