An assessment was carried out at the yard to the rear of Victory's Supermarket, Main Street, Dunleer, Co. Louth. Until recently, buildings had stood on this site. Three test-trenches were excavated within the site.
A thick layer of concrete overlay the entire site. In all trenches, this was removed to expose fill material which consisted of a brown clay that contained stone, brick and mortar. A lower layer of concrete was exposed in the southern extent of Trenches 1 and 3. This could not be removed entirely by the machine during the assessment phase of works. A small section was removed from each trench and it was found that the concrete overlay the natural boulder clay. The remains of a wall were visible in all three trenches. This wall is partially visible above the concrete that overlies the entire site and is also visible as a standing feature in the eastern elevation of the site. A second wall was also identified within Trench 1.
It would appear from all the different levels of concrete existing above and below the surface that this site was reused repeatedly and successive floors were laid and removed.
No features or finds of archaeological significance were recovered during the course of this assessment.
