Testing took place on 10 March 2004 using a JCB equipped with a toothless grading bucket. Five trenches, varying in length from 8m to 30m, were excavated across the proposed development area. Generally, the trenches were 1m deep. Testing revealed evidence of late 18th/early 19th-century building debris that was sealed by an imported topsoil layer. This layer of soil is believed to have been used to level the ground prior to the construction of the extant yard surface and buildings on site.
No features or finds of archaeological significance were uncovered in any of the test-trenches.
