Monitoring of topsoil-stripping was carried out at the site of a quarry at Mullaghvorneen, c. 2 km southwest of Longford town. This was the second phase of works, as stripping had been monitored under the same licence by Michael Tierney in 2001, when several fulachta fiadh had been discovered. The topography of the extraction site varied over a short distance. It was mainly flat but on the north-east side of the centre there was a low hill, with a ringfort situated on level ground at the summit. Monitored topsoil-stripping was carried out by bulldozer. The site was for the most part sterile of archaeological remains. However, in the north-east corner, opposite the ringfort, burnt-mound material was uncovered.
It was decided that, as the archaeological remains were located at the extreme north-eastern limit of the site, they could be safely left in situ. Therefore, no more of the mound was exposed than had been uncovered already, so only the western and southern boundaries of the site are now known. The material uncovered was 2.5m long and 2.26m wide and c. 0.1m deep.
Editor's note: Though carried out in 2002, this summary was received too late for inclusion in the bulletin of that year.
