Monitoring took place during development of a sewerage treatment plant by Longford County Council at Abbeyshrule village, which is very close to a medieval abbey and graveyard (SMR 23:113). No standing remains nor sites or features of archaeological interest were known to be present on the site.

The monitoring only involved the area of the sewerage treatment plant, as the pipeline area had already been extensively disturbed in the building of a road with new houses to each side. The soil-stripping of the site was monitored on 15 and 16 November 2004. No finds or features of any significance were found.
