An assessment was carried out on 8 December 2004 in advance of site works at Market Square, Newcastle West, Co. Limerick. The proposed development lies just beyond the eastern boundary of the zone of archaeological potential for the town.
Testing took place after the enabling works on this site had been completed. These works involved the demolition of all standing buildings and the removal of all concrete bases on the site. On completion of these works it was possible to fully assess the impact of these buildings on the original landscape. Five test-trenches were excavated. The result of the testing suggests considerable 19th- and 20th-century activity on the site and serious disturbance during the occupied life of the development area. Testing produced no evidence for activity prior to the 19th century.
