Fifteen detached dwellings, 48 semi-detached and nine townhouses with ancillary site works and roads were to be constructed at Killeline, Newcastle West. Two phases of archaeological work relating to the development were undertaken at the request of Limerick County Council. Test-trenches were excavated in the vicinity of a ringfort in Phase I (Excavations 2003, No. 1163, 03E1626). The ringfort was considered to be a tree-ring feature on the basis of cartographic evidence and the total lack of stratigraphy and features recorded in the trenches.
A total of 65 trenches were excavated by machine using a 2m flat bucket in the area of the development site in Phase II. Trenches 1–57 were excavated on the footprint of the foundations of the house sites and Trenches 58–65 were excavated on the line of the access roads. The topsoil was a wet silty clay loam with occasional small pebbles, red brick and tile. It was on average 0.1–0.25m deep. A series of modern drains containing modern drainpipe were recorded in some of the trenches. They were aligned north-south. The subsoil generally was very compacted mottled white-grey/yellow silty clay with frequent iron panning. Yellow compact clay was recorded in the northern portion of the site. A pit measuring c. 1m by 0.5m containing modern refuse was recorded in Trench 45.
No archaeological stratigraphy or artefacts were recorded in any of the trenches.
