Test-trenching was carried out at Nos 27 and 28 Thomond Gate and Kiely’s Bar in advance of the construction of a new mixed commercial and residential development. The proposed development is located within the zone of archaeological potential for the historic town of Limerick. The trenches were located in a concreted area formerly occupied by a lean-to glasshouse structure. Two trenches were excavated on the site, measuring 4m and 3.5m by 1m wide. The maximum depth that could safely be excavated in either trench was 2m and post-medieval pottery was recovered from this depth. A layer of rubble, up to 1m in depth, overlay this. The testing indicated that there were no archaeological remains in situ in the upper 2m of the site.
