Monitoring was undertaken at Sheep Street in an area adjacent to the medieval town wall in advance of a multi-storey development. The town wall was recorded and a limited excavation undertaken by Tracy Collins in July 2003 (Excavations 2003, No. 1180, 02E1318 ext.). The town wall crosses the site in a north-south direction directly underneath the east side of Sheep Street. This street was preserved in situ. Land to the east and west of the site was excavated to the natural parent material. The general stratigraphy of the site consisted of a layer of rubble and brick infill 1–2m deep which overlay a layer of dark-greyish-black silty clay that was 0.5–1m deep. Nothing of an archaeological nature was uncovered during the work.
