2004:1016 - KILMALLOCK: Dankso Foods, Sarsfield Street, Limerick

Test excavation was undertaken on 4 December 2004 associated with the construction of an extension to the main building within Dansko Foods. The test excavation did not occur on the site of construction, as a raft foundation and floor level of the extension had been built at the time of testing. Testing was required within the adjacent yard to determine the presence and nature of potential underlying medieval archaeology and to assess the nature of the impacts (if any) that may have resulted from the development. The test excavation achieved depths up to 2.5m, the stratigraphy of which comprised imported demolition debris as landfill with an overlying stone yard surface. No materials or artefacts of an archaeological nature were encountered. At this point it was deemed that the testing had reached depths greatly in excess of the ground impacts resulting from the adjacent raft foundations of the extension. As such, it is extremely unlikely that the extension had impacted upon heritage considerations, since it was built on similar landfill.
