Monitoring was undertaken during construction works on a retail development site at Smithsland South. The site is located to the south-west of Kilkenny city and covers an area of 97 acres. All topsoil removal and ancillary groundworks were monitored over a period of four weeks. Site workscommenced with the access road through the development and the removal of topsoil revealed that no archaeological features were present. A wide strip of undisturbed ground selected for the insertion of services was subsequently monitored and no archaeological deposits were uncovered here. The final phase of the development involved the construction of retail warehousing and ancillary works, including car parking and office space. These areas were all stripped of topsoil to the levels of sterile boulder clay and no archaeological features or finds were observed
