Monitoring took place of the construction of an industrial structure with associated carpark at Purcell's Inch industrial estate on the outskirts of Kilkenny city. No features were revealed, but the dumping of spoil from the site began to impinge on a recently registered archaeological monument. The author suggests that this monument be reclassified as a ringwork castle rather than simply an enclosure, and that it probably played a significant part in the development of Kilkenny in the early stages of the Anglo-Norman settlement. The monument was surveyed and drawn in plan and section for the first time. Damage to the monument as a result of the development was averted, but damage caused by a separate development adjoining the site had already taken place.
