Waterford City Council proposes to construct an 18km bypass around Waterford city, with associated link roads. The route forms part of the N25 and runs from Kilmeaden in Co. Waterford to Slieverue in Co. Kilkenny. Investigations at Sites 15-16 in the townland of Killaspy, Co. Kilkenny, were undertaken as part of pre-construction investigations of the N25 Waterford bypass. The work followed the identification of several possible archaeological features by Dave Pollock during Contract 2 testing in 2003 (Excavations 2002, No. 1030, 02E0196).
Two areas measuring 207.5m2 (Site 15) and 180.6m2 (Site 16) were stripped of topsoil by machine. A possible 19th-century rubble field drain bisected Site 15. This ran in a north-west/south-east direction diagonally across the trench. Fragments of 19th-century pottery were recovered from the topsoil above this feature and from within the drain itself. The remaining features of archaeological potential identified during testing were interpreted as tree-throw holes, natural variations in the subsoil and the remains of destroyed vegetation. With the exception of the 19th-century pottery, no artefacts were recovered.
This work was undertaken under Contract 3 archaeological investigations. The project is funded by the Department of Transport under the National Development Plan 2000–2006. The total archaeological cost is administered by the National Roads Authority through Waterford City Council.
