Excavations at a proposed quarry extension in Killaree, Threecastles, Co. Kilkenny, took place on 21 September 2004. The quarry is located in a small north-east/south-west-running valley that opens out into the flood-plain of the River Nore. Two monuments, a series of burials and a possible enclosure, were located within the boundaries of the existing quarry. Nothing now remains of either site, as quarrying operations have removed any traces of the original ground surface.
Eight trenches were excavated across the proposed extension area. The stratigraphy across the trenches was identical with the underlying bedrock appearing at 0.1–0.4m below the present surface. Testing did not reveal any deposits or finds relating to the previously recorded burials. Nothing of any archaeological significance was noted in any of the eight trenches. The natural limestone bedrock was encountered just below the present ground surface across the entire proposed extension area.
