Testing was carried out at Patrick Street Upper, Kilkenny, on 29 November 2004. The proposed development involves the construction of three apartment blocks and four terraced townhouses, with parking and ancillary services. The proposed development site straddles the southern perimeter of the archaeological constraint zone for the historic town of Kilkenny.
A total of 180m in the form of four test-trenches was excavated. Each trench was excavated to the natural clays or the top of archaeological deposits, with their locations based on the footprint of the proposed buildings. Two anomalous drain-type features were recorded in Trenches 1 and 4. Upon investigation they were considered to be of little archaeological significance. The remains of a stone-and-mortar French drain were recorded in the northern end of the site. This drain appeared to traverse the site in an east-west direction, following the line of a former property boundary.
