Test excavation was carried out on the site of a proposed extension to a house at Gowran Demesne, Co. Kilkenny, on 27 July 2004. The site is located in the south-east part of the zone of archaeological potential around the historic town, and the site of a 14th-century castle, possibly built on the site of an earlier motte, is located c. 90m north-west of the site. Existing patio slabs were lifted prior to the excavation of three trenches on the footprint of the proposed new wall foundations. A disturbed layer of grey coarse sand and gravel and grey sandy silt, 0.1–0.25m deep, the bedding material for the patio surface, directly overlay yellow/brown sandy clay subsoil in all trenches. No archaeological material was discovered.
