Waterford City Council proposes to construct an 18km bypass around Waterford city, with associated link roads. The route forms part of the N25 and runs from Kilmeaden in Co. Waterford to Slieverue in Co. Kilkenny. The work outlined here was undertaken at Sites 31–33 in the townland of Dunkitt, Co. Kilkenny, as part of pre-construction investigations of the N25 Waterford bypass, Contract 3. On this site, testing by Emmet Stafford in 2003 identified possible archaeological features (02E0618) and full resolution was carried out in May/June 2004. The National Roads Authority through Waterford City Council administered the total archaeological cost.
At Site 31, following topsoil-stripping of an area measuring 352m2, five features were identified. These were irregular in plan and contained sterile stony fills. No artefacts were retrieved from this site. The features may be a result of low-intensity agricultural activity of a post-medieval or modern date, or alternatively they could be a result of natural anomalies or root holes.
At Site 32, following topsoil-stripping of an area measuring 314m2, two linear features interpreted as possible field boundaries or land drains were excavated. Small rubble-filled drains were also present.
At Site 33, following topsoil-stripping of an area measuring 342m2, one irregular shallow stone-filled drain was identified.
