An impact assessment of a proposed residential development was requested. The area lay within the confines of the medieval walled area of Callan. More specifically, the site was situated on the south side of West Street, 200m from an Anglo-Norman motte. The recently rediscovered Civil Survey of Callan records three urban tower-houses, the West Gate and the Middle Gate along West Street. On the first-edition OS map of Callan the subject site is marked largely as greenfield, though a row of early 19th-century houses that were removed prior to construction is shown fronting onto West Street. Six test-trenches were excavated within the development area. Nothing of archaeological interest was noted.
