Kilkenny County Council requested an assessment of a proposed health centre and residential development at Mill Street, Callan. The proposed development area lies within the historic town of Callan and is situated between the suggested line of the southern town defences and Mill Street, which is a thoroughfare of medieval origin that extended to the East Gate of the town walls.
Testing uncovered the buried remains of a medieval property boundary ditch that is situated at right angles to Mill Street. In addition, what may be a contemporary cobbled laneway was recorded. Both areas of archaeological potential would have been impacted upon by the proposed development and, accordingly, the site layout was revised to avoid them.
