Monitoring was undertaken at Bridge Street, Callan, as part of granted planning permission to build an extension to the rear of licensed premises and construct a dwelling house. No archaeological remains were uncovered in the course of monitoring.
The site was partially given over to a green area, with the remainder formerly occupied by outbuildings and a yard area. The variation in soil stratigraphy was reflective of the former uses of the site. For instance the western part of the site, a relatively untouched greenfield area, was dominated by topsoil and undisturbed natural depositions, whereas the eastern part of the site was dominated by overburden containing residual building debris, previous disturbances by the laying of service pipes and a dark, silty, dank soil with a strong aroma that was uncovered at the interface between the natural depositions and the building debris.
