Waterford City Council proposed to construct an 18km bypass around Waterford city, with associated link roads. The route forms part of the N25 and runs from Kilmeaden in Co. Waterford to Slieverue in Co. Kilkenny. As part of Contract 3 pre-development testing of the archaeological potential of Areas D, E, G, H and K–O, a series of trenches were excavated within the proposed land-take of the road. A fulacht fiadh was identified and later excavated in Area L by Catríona Gleeson (No. 925, Excavations 2004, 04E0318), two deposits were identified in Area K and one large deposit was identified and later excavated in Area M by Joanna Wren (No. 924, Excavations 2004, 04E0290). The remaining areas were devoid of any evidence for past human activity.

The work outlined here was undertaken at Site 45 (Area K) in the townland of Kilmurry, Co. Kilkenny. Full excavation was carried out in July 2004 under an extension to the licence. The National Roads Authority through Waterford City Council administered the total archaeological cost.

Following topsoil-stripping of an area measuring 427m2, four irregular undated soil deposits were identified. All deposits consisted of sterile, silty and stony fills. The nondescript nature of the features on this site, together with the complete absence of artefacts and the very low yield of archaeological material from sample processing, suggests that the features were related to modern agriculture.
