Monitoring of groundworks was carried out on 24 March 2004 at 2 Fairgreen Terrace, Naas, Co. Kildare, prior to the construction of an extension to a premises. The site was situated within the zone of potential of Naas town, just south of the suggested course of the medieval town defences and the associated Green Gate. The groundworks consisted of the removal of the concrete surface, the cleaning up and levelling off of the exposed surface and the excavation of a trench 6.2m long, 0.7m wide and 0.7m deep along the western edge of the site prior to underpinning the adjacent wall. Below the surface concrete was a 0.16m-thick layer of topsoil and beneath this was the natural subsoil, which was orange/brown sand and gravel containing frequent rolled stones up to 0.4m in diameter. Some 0.3m of this natural was excavated in the trench. No archaeological features were noted in either the trench or the natural subsoil exposed across the surface of the site.
