Monitoring of topsoil removal and foundation excavation was carried out to the rear of Behan's supermarket in Kill village (SMR 19:18). Twenty-three base pads were mechanically excavated, with each pit measuring c. 1.5m by 2m. The pits were excavated to the depth of subsoil, which varied across the site from 0.6m to 1.5m. The stratigraphy of these pits was identical, comprising hardcore over garden soil over natural subsoil, which was compact, stony, orange-brown boulder clay. The garden soil ranged in colour from dark-black to mid-brown within the site and only modern earthenware pipe and animal bone were recovered from excavated deposits. The animal bone came from the rear of a former butcher's premises and is not considered archaeological. These base pads were then connected by a trench foundation for ground beams, on which the superstructure for the supermarket will be constructed. No archaeological finds or features were noted in the excavated sections of the site.
