Excavations at a development site at Melitta Road, Co. Kildare, took place on 28 April 2004. Three long trenches were excavated across the southern half of the development site and within the zone of archaeological potential surrounding the site of a burial. The proposed site is 4.04ha in total area and is located to the north-east of Kildare town.
Testing did not reveal any archaeological features or finds. The stratigraphy was relatively uniform across the three trenches. A 0.1m-deep sod overlies mid-brown silty clay. The subsoil occurs at 0.5m below the surface and is a grey-brown mixed sandy clay. The topsoil becomes slightly deeper and the subsoil becomes sandier as you move east across the three trenches. Nothing that could be associated with the nearby burial site was recorded.
