The excavation involved opening three test-trenches in advance of proposed extension works at Colbinstown House. The house dates to the 19th or 20th centuries but lies on the site of Colbinstown Castle, a tower-house constructed around 1465.
The testing discovered a north-south-running stone-lined drain that measured 0.10–0.18m wide and 0.24m high (interior dimensions). No artefacts were found within the drain. A possible shoe fragment composed of numerous small nails hammered into a piece of wood or leather found between the stones lining the drain may suggest a post-medieval date.
