An assessment including pre-development testing was carried out at a proposed development site comprising housing, foul and surface water sewers and associated road construction at Carrighall Lower, Ballyshannon, Kilcullen, Co. Kildare. The site is located within an area of high archaeological potential. Ballyshannon Demesne (SMR 28:58/32:3), an archaeological complex comprising a castle, church, graveyard and moat, lies west of the development site. An earthwork (SMR 32:4) is also in Carrighall townland to the east of the site.
Six trenches were excavated along the foundation trenches of the nine houses and two along the associated roads and services area. The same sterile stratigraphic sequence was recorded throughout the development area. Nothing of archaeological significance was recorded.
