The site was identified during pre-development N7 road widening centre-line testing (Excavations 2003, No. 881, 03E1606) carried out between 13 and 17 October 2003. The Naas road widening and interchanges scheme is essentially an improvement of the existing N7 between Maudlins interchange and the Dublin/Kildare county boundary.
Site 14D was located immediately north of the existing N7 Castlewarden road in a large open field. A 20m by 20m site was opened around the area of known archaeological importance in January 2004. Three small pits/post-holes were identified near one another. There was no evidence of any associated burning and the features did not form any discernible plan or pattern. Three small, unworked flint flakes were recovered from one of the fills, suggesting possible prehistoric activity. The lack of any further associated material suggests that these were isolated features in the landscape.
