Test-trenching was carried out in five areas of archaeological potential on the N21 Castleisland–Abbeyfeale road improvement scheme. Four produced no evidence of archaeological deposits, whilst the fifth area revealed evidence of late post-medieval activity.
Three stone-built structures were found, probably 19th-century houses. The buildings are shown on the 1841 OS map and are likely to have been built after the construction of the adjacent road in 1827 (the present N21). The best preserved of the buildings had a hearth and an intact lime mortar floor that showed the impressions of furniture.
